Everything You Need to Know About Anti-Wrinkle Injections

None of us can outrun the time or completely stop the ageing process. Or even reverse our look to 40-something to 20-something. However, it is possible to have your wrinkles treated with injectables, commonly known as botulin toxin. And while there is nothing wrong with ageing or having wrinkles, it is good to know that this option exists and it can improve the appearance of the lines significantly. But that’s only if you feel bothered by these wrinkles. And if you do, here’s what you need to know.

What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injectables?

Anti-wrinkle injectables are treatments designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. These injectables use a purified form of botulinum toxin, which temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles, leading to smoother skin. This effect typically lasts from 3 months up to 6 months and more, depending on the individual physiology and body’s metabolism.

When and Why Did They Become Popular?

Anti-wrinkle injectables became widely popular in the early 2000s. Their rise in popularity is due to their effectiveness, minimal downtime, and the increasing desire for non-surgical cosmetic solutions. Celebrities and public figures openly embracing these treatments also contributed to their mainstream acceptance. And since the use of this product became more known and accessible to non-celebrities, it has become a commonly used treatment for facial lines and wrinkles.

What Is the Main Ingredient?

The main ingredient in anti-wrinkle injectables is botulinum toxin. This substance is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When used in small, controlled doses, it safely and effectively reduces muscle activity that causes wrinkles.

How Does It Work?

Botulinum toxin works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected. When these muscles can’t contract, the wrinkles in the overlying skin soften and smooth out. The effects are temporary, typically lasting three to six months, after which the muscles gradually regain movement, and the wrinkles may reappear.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Your skin will be first assessed and we’ll discuss your goals. The most popular option is 2 or 3 areas, usually on the forehead and around the eyes. The procedure itself is relatively quick and involves a series of small injections into the target areas. Most people describe the sensation as a slight pinch or sting. There’s no need for anaesthesia, and you can usually resume normal activities immediately afterwards. There can be small bruising as sometimes a little blood vessel might come in the way of injection. However, since injections are small and the needle used is fine, this is usually minimal.

Is This For You?

Good candidates for anti-wrinkle injectables are individuals looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. It’s suitable for those who are generally healthy, have realistic expectations, and understand that the results are temporary. While the appearance of the lines will improve, it overall won’t change your face. You will have your face but with less apparent lines.

This NOT for you if…

Anti-wrinkle injectables may not be suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with certain neurological disorders, or those with allergies to any ingredients in the injection. It’s essential to disclose your medical history to your aesthetician during the consultation.

Apart from these technical bits and medical reasons, a person who is in denial of the ageing process or wants to “turn back the clock” decades with a new look will likely be disappointed, therefore not the best candidate for this procedure.

I also don’t treat people under the age of 25 with the anti-ageing injections for my own personal ethical reasons I don’t think it is a good idea to encourage this treatment to very young people. There will be plenty of time to do this in the future. 😉

Keeping Your Expectations Real

While anti-wrinkle injectables can significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles, it’s important to know thyself AND to have realistic expectations. These treatments will not completely transform your face or stop the ageing process. However, they can help you look more refreshed and youthful, subtly enhancing your natural beauty.

Also, if you have been doing this for a while, you have probably noticed that your body started to develop a tolerance for the product and while it may have been a more effective and longer-lived result several years ago, you might now need to do these treatments more often to have the continuous result. I also encourage to take a break from the injections now and then, just to re-connect to sense of normality of movement in the facial muscles and also to see where and why you continue to form the lines.

However, when all other things are in good balance, anti-wrinkle injectables offer a safe and effective way to address signs of ageing with minimal downtime. By understanding what they are, how they work, and what to expect, you can make an informed decision suitable you’re your own personal circumstances about whether this treatment is right for you.
